Growth experiment template: free CSV and experiment doc

A free growth experiment template with every field a test needs, from the hypothesis to the learning. Download it as a CSV for Google Sheets, Excel, Notion or Airtable, or as a one-page doc for a single experiment. No account, no email. Each field says when it becomes required, with the same rules Hypotize enforces.

Experiment tracker, CSV

One row per experiment and 18 columns, with three example rows: one idea, one ready to start, one closed with its learning. Delete the examples and add yours.

One-page experiment doc, Markdown

The same fields for one experiment, split into before and after the test. Paste it into Notion, Google Docs or your repository.

What goes in each column

Every field, and when it becomes required

An experiment does not need every field on day one. An idea needs three. The rest become required at two moments: before the test starts, and when it closes.

Title title

A short name that says the page or channel and the change.

To create it

Idea short_idea

One or two sentences: what you will change.

To create it

Funnel stage funnel

One of Awareness, Acquisition, Activation, Revenue, Retention, Referral.

To create it

Hypothesis hypothesis

If we change X for Y, then Z will move, because of the evidence you have.

To reach Ready

Segment target_segment

Who sees the test: new visitors on mobile, trial users in week one.

To reach Ready

Success metric success_metric

The one number that decides the result, written before the test starts.

To reach Ready

Fail criterion fail_criterion

What result means the idea did not work, so nobody moves the goalposts later.

Optional

Baseline baseline_value

The metric today, with its period and source.

Optional

Start date start_date

YYYY-MM-DD.

To reach Ready

Due date due_date

YYYY-MM-DD: when you will read the result.

To reach Ready

Framework framework

ICE, PIE or RICE.

Optional

Scores scores

One score per letter, from 1 to 10: impact=8; confidence=6; ease=7.

Optional

Status status

Idea, Approved, Ready, Running, Analyzing, Winning, Failed, Inconclusive, Learned or Archived. Empty means Idea.

Optional

Result result

Win, Lose or Neutral, once the test is over.

To close it

What happened actual_result

The measured number against the baseline, the sample and the dates.

To close it

Learning learning_summary

What the team now knows that it did not know before, in one paragraph.

To close it

Next step next_steps

Ship it, iterate, or drop it, and the follow-up test if there is one.

Optional

Evidence evidence_links

Links to the test report, the dashboard or the research, separated by |.

Optional

The two rules

Two checks that keep a tracker honest

Before the test starts

No test reaches Ready without a hypothesis, a segment, a success metric, a start date and a due date. Writing the metric first stops the team from picking, after the fact, the number that happened to go up.

When the test closes

No test closes as Winning, Failed, Inconclusive or Learned without what happened and a written learning. A closed test with an empty learning is a test the team will run again.

This CSV contains no lifecycle validation, and importing it into a spreadsheet or a Notion database does not add those checks: anyone can fill in the status and skip the rest. Hypotize enforces both on the server, for people in the web app and for AI agents connected through MCP.

Worked example

One experiment, filled in to the end

Product page: reviews under the price

Hypothesis
If we show reviews next to the price for mobile visitors, add-to-cart will rise, because session recordings show most visitors never scroll to the reviews.
Segment
Mobile visitors on product pages
Success metric
Add-to-cart rate per session
Baseline
5.4% add-to-cart rate, last 30 days, product analytics
What happened
6.1% against 5.4% for the control over 21 days.
Learning
On mobile, proof next to the price matters more than proof lower on the page. Next, test the same placement on the cart page.

With an AI agent

Give the file to your agent

The column names are the field names of the Hypotize import, so the agent needs no mapping: it only converts dates, scores and links, and leaves out the empty cells. Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Grok Bot, Cursor or Codex to Hypotize, attach the CSV and paste the prompt. The agent imports up to 50 rows at a time, and Hypotize checks each row against the two rules: a row marked Ready without a success metric is rejected, and the error names it.

Prompt for your agent

Read the attached growth experiment CSV. Import every row into my Hypotize project with the experiment import tool, keeping each row's status. Convert the dates to ISO timestamps, the scores column to one number per letter and the evidence column to a list of links. Leave out empty optional fields, including result: do not send them as empty text or null. If Hypotize rejects a row, tell me which row and which field is missing, and do not invent values to make it pass.

FAQ

Questions about the template

What should a growth experiment template include?

A title, the idea, the funnel stage, a hypothesis, the segment, one success metric, start and due dates, a priority score, and after the test the result, what happened and the learning. This template has all of them, plus a fail criterion, a baseline, next steps and evidence links.

Is the template free?

Yes. The CSV and the one-page experiment doc download directly from this page, with no account and no email.

Can I use it in Google Sheets, Excel, Notion or Airtable?

Yes. It is a plain CSV: Google Sheets, Excel, Notion and Airtable all import CSV files. The steps for each are on this page, with a link to each vendor's help page.

What does the template not do?

A file cannot enforce its own rules: anyone can mark a test Learned with an empty learning. Hypotize rejects that write on the server, in the web app and over MCP.

How do I move the template into Hypotize?

Connect your AI agent to Hypotize and give it the CSV with the prompt on this page. The column names match the fields of the Hypotize import: the agent only converts dates, scores and links to the import format, leaves out the empty cells, and imports up to 50 rows at a time. If one row breaks a rule, the whole batch is rolled back and the error names that row.
